Planning a New Character in Path of Exile

Being one of the more unique MMORPGs out there due to its unique character skill system, creating and leveling a character in Path of Exile may seem quite intimidating for newer players. However, playing this deep and fascinating game need not be tough and complicated. All it really is about is understanding the inner workings of the system that has made Path of Exile successful. This includes learning about the different parts of the character that need to be developed throughout the leveling process.

First off, the trait that makes Path of Exile unique compared to other games is the separation between active skills and passive skills. The former are acquired from gems that are inserted into weapons and armor, which can then be leveled up with use and bolstered with support gems. As for the latter, they are in a big skill tree that features an open-ended progression system. If you so wish to get the passive skill of an adjacent character class in the skill tree, then you are free to do so if you can get enough skill points to do so. Of course, it's recommended that you focus on your own character class' passive skills in order to be at your most effective.

With the breadth of the passive skill system in this game, it would not be easy at all to come up with a plan for a character for the first time without having to feel your way through. But for veteran Path of Exile players, they would have the experience to come up with ideas on what could then become powerful characters that can be worked on and built up to a set of criteria. This includes planning to have a good set of passive skills, acquire choice active skill gems, wear the best Path of Exile items, and so on.

If you are stumped even after much extensive study of your chosen character class, then you may find references online through various character guides written by dedicated players. They are all over the Internet and they have information regarding various builds with different strengths and capabilities for particular character classes. Take note though that they do depend on their post date, which is relative to which patch of the game they were written for. Even though the one that catches your eye may be a bit outdated, you can still learn quite a bit from it, then you can check out if there are more updated guides for that particular build that you want to focus on to see what the updated parts are.

Also courtesy of helpful and dedicated members of the Path of Exile community on the Internet, there are now character planners available for free use that help players, both old and new, to plan out their characters in a more precise and extensive way. The really good ones let you simulate the skill tree so that you can try out various allocations of skill points on whatever passive skills fit your fancy. In this way, you can then determine the exact number of skill points you wish to put in the skills you want to get in order to get the kind of build you want for your character.
